32. Founding the non-profit, Little Wishes, and making a difference for seriously ill children with Laura Euphrat
Laura Euphrat, a pediatric oncology nurse for 36 years, co-founded Little Wishes, a nonprofit that grants wishes to hospitalized children. The idea originated from a serendipitous encounter with a terminally ill boy who loved baseball. Euphrat's persistence led to legendary baseball manager Dusty Baker visiting the boy, which inspired the concept.
Little Wishes has grown to serve 45 hospitals in 25 states, with 92 more on the wait list. Despite initial challenges, including securing nonprofit status and managing finances along with initial skepticism from hospitals, the organization has thrived, thanks to Euphrat's determination and the support of a dedicated team.
Laura discussed the advantages and challenges of having a nonprofit organization. She explained that the main benefit is the ability to receive tax-deductible donations, but obtaining the nonprofit status can be costly and time-consuming. She shared that they were fortunate to have a law firm provide pro bono services to help with the process. Laura emphasized the importance of perseverance and networking to find the right resources. She also mentioned the need to establish a board of directors, create bylaws, and follow regulations to maintain the nonprofit status.
